When you think of a cocaine addict, what comes to mind? You may picture someone who puts themselves in harm’s way to get their next fix. Someone who doesn’t care what the cost as long as they get their drug and feel that high once more. That’s similar to how we behave when we indulge in harmful foods containing processed sugar.

Many of us are aware that refined sugar is bad for our health, yet we indulge in it. Some of us who are addicted can even find ourselves denying we have a problem.

For people who are prone to addiction, sugar can actually be more addictive than cocaine or heroin. Just the sight of a sugary food can send a signal to their brain causing them to eat unhealthy amounts of the food.

So. . . If this describes you, follow me on a little journey. . .

We’ll start with some basic information. . .

  • Refined sugar is unhealthy, but not all sugars are bad for you. Refined sugars include white sugar, brown sugar, Splenda, etc. It is alright to have some added sugars occasionally, but the typical American eats entirely too much of the sweet stuff. The American Heart Association recommends that the average woman have no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar daily and the average man have no more than 9 teaspoons. Yet the typical American adult consumes 22 teaspoons of added sugar daily!

  • Sugar is found in most processed foods, about 74% of the foods we buy at the grocery store, according to a report in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Foods such as spaghetti sauces, breads, chips, cereals, flavored yogurts, and much more, can contain unhealthy added sugars.

  • People who consume too much sugar can experience fatigue, headaches, bloating, nausea, irritability, brain fog, depression, etc. The reason for this is that sugar is toxic to the body.

That leads us to the next step in our journey. . .

Detoxification

So if sugar is toxic for our bodies, what can we do to remove the burden and finally feel better?

The answer: Detox.

It’s a good idea to detox your body occasionally to rid it of these toxins so it doesn’t become overburdened to the point of no return. Too much added sugar can cause inflammation which can lead to premature aging, fatty liver disease, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, depression, and some cancers.

Detoxing will help you regain control of your body and reduce impulses to eat sugar-laden foods. It will also reset your taste buds so you can taste the true sweetness that is found in naturally sweetened fruits.

When embarking on a sugar detox it’s important to keep in mind that you will you be avoiding white sugar, brown sugar, fructose, honey, agave, Splenda, etc. Additionally, you will avoid all refined grains which break down into sugar once they enter the body.
